Ice Cream Cartel and Jessaprimadonna Take Princess Derby Trials
AJAX DOWNS, JUNE 30, 2021 - Marie Broadstock and Picov Cattle Company's ICE CREAM CARTEL won the faster of two Trials for the upcoming $50,000 Princess Derby at Ajax Downs on Wednesday, June 30, setting up an exciting final for the Derby on July 14.

Trained by Bob Broadstock of Nestleton, ON, Ice Cream Cartel, making her second start of the 2021 season, quickly assumed command out of the gate in the 350 yard sprint while heavily favoured Streakinlilwagon broke awkwardly and slowly. Under jockey Ismael Mosquiera, Ice Cream Cartel won by 1 1/2 lengths over Big Dog racing's Goodness Graceious who was a nose ahead of Streakinlilwagon. The time of :17.982 was good for an 89 speed index.
Broadstock purchased Ice Cream Cartel, a grey 3-year-old by Five Bar Cartel, from the 2019 Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders' Mixed Sale in 2019 for $9,000 (US). The filly won her career debut in 2020 in four races.

The first Princess Derby Trial went to JESSAPRIMADONNA, owned by Ridgeway's Craig Spada and Isaak Fehr of Taber, AB, who stumbled at the start but recovered to run down speedy Corrina Corrine to easily win by 1 1/4 lengths in :18.325 for a 79 speed index. Cory Spataro rode for trainer Spada who claimed the Louisiana bred for $10,000 in December, 2020 from a second-place finish at Evangeline Downs. Jessaprimadonna finished fifth in her 250-yard season debut at Ajax before this win.

"She's a big, strong mare who looks like she is going to appreciate the longer distances," said Spada. "Anytime you can have one of your horses get into the final of a stakes race, it's all you can ask for and anything can happen in the final."

The 10 fastest times from the 3-year-old fillies in the two Trials advance to the final (see below).
